Just a Word (or Two) From Mom.

Everybody that knows mom, knows that she would prefer to look at the lighter side of every situation. She's been accused of being a "Pollyanna" more than once. But now she's really peeved, and nothing I could wag or bark can get her off her soap box.

For the last several years she's attended the Westminster Kennel Club's Dog Show, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Due to scheduling conflicts this year, she wasn't able to go, which was really disappointing fur her since a new Coonhound got listed!

Then after the show, she hears that the WKC dropped Pedigree as a sponsor. Pedigree has been a sponsor of the show for the last 24 years! Apparently, "people" found the images of shelter dogs used in the Pedigree campaign to be "depressing". This campaign has enlightened so many to the plight of wonderful, adoptable shelter dogs. On the other hand, shows like the WKC, although unwittingly, add to the demand for purebreds, and often from puppy mills and not from trustworthy breeders. She's most disappointed in their on air commentator David Frei, she used to think that he was so wonderful *shaking head*. In his statement to the AP: “The feedback we got from our primary audience was that they were seeing commercials that made them want to turn the channel”

Who is this "primary audience" Mr. Frei? The elite portion of your audience and members of the WKC board? We've seen the commercials and they've only been informative and uplifting. And all the adoptable dogs were presented in an inviting manner, no cowering or fearful dogs. Just hopeful faces, looking forward to being adopted.
Just so you know, we're not shilling fur Pedigree. It used to be my food of choice before I was switched to a grainfree kibble. But we do appreciate all that Pedigree has done and continues to do for shelter dogs. Thanks for listening *helping mom off her soapbox*. And thanks for stopping by!

More Monday (Everyday!) Mischief!

Many of you know already that I'm made fur mischief! Mom often calls me her personal Pooka, although I think she's only kidding!
A pooka is a mischievous Irish creature, often causing harm, depending on where in the country he or she is living. Usually the pooka appears as a large horse, roaming the countryside at night but has been know to take on many different guises. Now I'm a big dog with long legs and I do love to romp but I never (or almost never) cause any damage! *shaking head* Okay, maybe a little!

I'd prefer to have my friends think of me as a benevolent Leprechaun! Always looking for fun and bringing all my pals a bit of luck! Now if only I could find my pot of gold!

Another Talented Tuesday!

Mom says everyone is talented, each in his or her own way. We're still working on my "special" talents, although usually it's fur getting myself into trouble! If there's treats involved, I can be a champion sitter, stayer and lay downer, usually all at the same time at lightening speed!

I'm very good at knocking things off the top of the refrigerator, so mom needs to find a better place fur the bread. She's sure one day I'll have that big icebox open too!

Spring is in the Air!

We've been enjoying a milder than usual winter here in the Northeast. Not that we're complaining, but after last year's almost endless winter, this is pretty welcome!
The Snowdrop flowers on our front yard are blooming, usually they're poking up through a few inches of snow!

Earlier this week, mom went to the Martha Stewart show (again), I'm just very glad that she didn't take me this time. Once is enough fur this pup! She enjoyed the taping and brought home a nice assortment of goodies from the show.

Then on her way back to work, she walked through the Flower District, and couldn't resist taking a few pictures of the beautiful flowers! I just wish that I was there to sniff them, I'm sure they smelled very interesting!

Training Day!

Hiya buddies!
We all know how important good training is, so I'm going to just run over the hightlights of a properly trained mom or dad!

1. Remember to reward any good behavior with the paw! Let them know that you appreciate all that they're learning to do fur you!
2. In keeping with the paw theme, when they sit down to relax, remind them with your paw that it's time fur you! You've waited all day fur them to sit and relax and they need to remember to play with you now!
3. During dinner, use the paw to remind them that you're entitled to a taste (or 2) of the people's foods. Never works fur me, but it's worth a try buddies!

4. When they're getting ready fur work during the week is a great time to lay out the guilt trip... works fur me all the time! Unless it's a Barker Lounge Day, there's always a few extra treats in it fur me!
5. Remind your person what side of the bed is yours, mine is usually the middle!

Just look at this face! Look angelic, don't I? Can't fool mom 'tho.

After my breakfast and walk this morning, as she was getting ready fur work, she heard me go upstairs. She assumed (& never assume anything with a hound) that I was going back to bed. BOL!
Surprise! I very quietly ransacked her hamper. When she found me on the bed, surrounded by socks and sweaters, she wasn't too happy. Of course, she should have taken a picture, but she was a little peeved as she had to head out the door.
Oh well, maybe next time she'll remember to put the nicely folded laundry away. I had to take advantage of the opportunity while I could! Who could blame me buddies?

Snowy Saturday!

We've had it pretty easy here in the Northeast, compared to last year's endless winter. But we had a few inches of snow yesterday, so I was able to play fur a bit until my paws got too cold!

I like snow, but don't like when it's too deep to get around in. This snowfall was perfect fur me! Although the wind and the snowflakes made me shake my ears!

So, I helped mom fill our bird feeder, we played catch with a few snowballs then it was back to my couch! It was another terrific Saturday!

The Pet Blogger Challenge!

Thanks Amy of Go Pet Friendly and Edie of Will My Dog Hate Me for hosting the Pet Blogger Challenge! This is our first year of blogging, so I'll turn the keyboard over to mom and have her answer all your questions!
Thanks Prudence, so here we go with our answers!

1. When did you begin your blog?
June 5th, 2011, after my usual procrastination.... I finally dove in! I had really wanted to start a personal blog dealing with my many hobbies and work a while back but couldn't find my "voice" . It's much easier to write for Prudence, she's an open book.

2. What was your original purpose for starting a blog?
To share Prudence's adventures, as I imagine her seeing them through her eyes. I'd like to also introduce our kitties to our readers over time. We had been tweeting for a while (@tildatoo) and Prudence sometimes needs more than 140 characters to express herself.

3. Is your current purpose the same?
Currently, yes, although I'm exploring ways of growing out. Letting Prudence be a spokesdog for rescued dogs perhaps.

If so, how do you feel you’ve met your goals?
The fact that we continue to post and our readership is growing slowly, but surely.

4. Do you blog on a schedule or as the spirit moves you?
I try to post three times a week, although I think it would help if I kept to a structured schedule.

If the latter, do you worry about… well, whatever you might worry about (e.g. losing traffic, losing momentum)?
What I worry about is losing momentum on my part. I often think I have a touch of Attention Deficit... oooh, somthing shiney..... Sorry.

5. Are you generating income from your blog?
I have an ad, but I need to draw more traffic to order to make more than a few cents. It's worth it to me as long as it's fun. And I enjoy it.

6. What do you like most about blogging in general and your blog in particular?
I love the community! Seldom does a post not get a comment. There is such great support among fellow pet bloggers and the anipals of Twitter. I was able to attend BlogPaws and BarkWorld Expo in 2011 and loved meeting online twitter and blogging friends in person.
Blogging has also shown me the need to improve my own photography and writing skills, so it's a challenge, but one I enjoy.

7. What do you like least?
I can't think of anything, perhaps my own disappointment if I miss a Saturday Pet Blog Hop.

8. How do you see your blog changing/growing in 2012?
I hope to post more and have better photos. Perhaps include more "Life With a Coonhound and Crazy Cats Tips"!

My First Award!

Several weeks ago, Leslie from Bringing Up Bella chose us as one of the recipients of the Liebster Blog Award! This is our first Award and we're so excited! So excited that we (meaning mom) procrastinated about writing the perfect post about it *dang*.

Then last week our stunning pal Cathy Keisha presented us with the Liebster Blog Award! Yowza! I told mom we'd better get our paws to the keyboard. CK was on our list of blogs to include. She's always up front (if not in your face!) and makes us laugh. She knows how to rule the roost!

So here's how it works:

"Liebster means “dearest” in German, and the award is intended to help up-and-coming blogs get the attention they deserve. As with any award, there is a bit of ceremony involved. In order to accept the award, we must do the following:

1. Copy and paste the award on our blog.
2. Link back to the blogger who gave us the award.

When we think of kindness, our pal Mario comes to mind. He doesn't qualify since he has over 200 followers, but his M has a terrific blog. She writes from the heart about dealing with Parkinson's Disease. Very uplifting with lots of good information.

Our twitter pal Chesire's blog is "Words of a Mindful Kitten". Chesire is a security officer for our PawPawties and has written a book too!

Another of my twitter pals, Yoda, writes about his life with his family. He's a lot like me, loving his toys, treats and people.

47 from Rocco's House is a talented aspiring artist. Her blog chronicles her life with her pups Rocco and Leia.

Basset Momma is all "about random thoughts and daily muse in the life of a basset hound" An avid Lions fan, she writes about the entertaining Fred and Gloria. We have a real soft spot fur hounds at our house too!

By Nature Dog Food Review!

The good people at By Nature sent us some kibble for me to try a few weeks ago. Now since I was a puppy, I've been eating the same dry dog food, which we won't name here. I liked it and it's supposed to be very good for me. But over the past few years I've developed a recurring yeast "condition" in my ears. I have long ears and mom tries her best to keep them clean and dry but this was getting very frustrating for her and for me! My V.E.T. gave her medicine for my ears, but because it keeps coming back, she thinks my diet may play a big part in this problem.

We tried the Adult Dog Formula, which has wonderful things like chicken and lamb meal, oats, brown rice, flaxseed and even berries like blueberries, raspberries and cranberries. All full of what mom says are antioxidants.

Mom was careful to slowly incorporate the By Nature food into my meals, so as not to "rock" my system. After the first week, that was all I was eating. I love it, even cleaning up the mess around my dish that happens when I eat. And mom sees a big improvement in my ears! So much less "flapping". And she says my coat is softer too. This is just the beginning with By Nature for me, so we'll see how things go in a few months, but mom thinks that even though it may cost more, after reading that Dog Food Advisor gives By Nature Adult Formula 4 (out of 5) stars, she thinks it's worth it. Less monies spent on ear medicine and one less trip to the V.E.T for me, so it's a win for both of us!

A Treasure!

One of our new blogging friends, 47 from www.roccoshouse.com has recently discovered her talent and love of drawing. She had asked if anyone would like to have their pet sketched. So Mom commented on her blog and we were so happy she chose me as one of her subjects!
Well, when we saw the finished sketch, we were amazed! Mom was taught (many years ago) that an important part of drawing was to be able to see what is really there, not what your mind perceives to be there. 47 captured me in my "glory" as mom likes to say. From the diamond on my nose to the bones on my collar!

But what was even nicer were the wonderful words 47 used in describing her process in creating my portrait. We were so touched by her thoughtfulness!

What To Do!

Hi buddies!
Christmas is just a few weeks away. Decorations are going up & I have to watch my tail, (literally!) so I don't accidentally "sweep" anything off the table or tree! Well, our tree isn't up yet, but I've been practicing being careful.
I think it's much safer to stick to my sofa. I rearrange the cushions just right and it's a win, win. At least until mom gets home!

Now, I'd like to ask fur some advice. Lately a momma kitty and her kittens have been visiting our porch. I'm pretty cool with my indoor kitties, but sometimes I don't appreciate the outdoor kitties so much. I try not to be too barky, but I'm afraid mom's going to think we have room fur more! Baroooo! No way! She puts out food fur them but now that it's getting colder, she's beginning to worry about them and has been hoping to get them into a real home.

She'd like to try to take them to a shelter, but is afraid they might be worse off there. So if anyone has any advice, we'd really appreciate it buddies. Thanks fur everything!

Mom gets a little nostalgic every now and then fur my puppy days. Even I have to admit, I was one rambunctious pup!
So we thought we could share a couple "now and then" pictures with you!

Winter's On The Way!

Winter's coming buddies, before you know it, we'll be dipping our paws (and noses) into the snow. After last year's long, snowy winter, mom shudders just thinking about it, but we have to be prepared!

Morton Salt’s Safe-T-Pet® ice melt is sponsoring a public service campaign, kicking off on Dec. 22, 2011, with “National Keep Pets Safe in Winter Day" and running through January 2012. The purpose of this is to make our two legged friends aware of the dangers that winter can bring to their pets and other outdoor creatures. We've included some of their tips and added a few of our own. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Because of my short coat, if I'm out for a long walk, mom makes sure I'm wearing a coat or sweater. Since I'm a scent hound, I'm never off leash (unless at a secure dog park or my doggy daycare). We're more apt to get lost if our once familiar haunts become covered in snow. And just in case, always make sure we have our id tags on!
We use pet-friendly ice melters such as Morton® Safe-T-Pet® on our steps and sidewalks, but our paws are always wiped with a damp cloth after a stroll around the neighborhood. You never can tell what a coonhound might have walked through buddies!
Please don't forget, anti-freeze is deadly for dogs and kitties! Because we're drawn to the sweet taste, mom's extra vigilant when we see any spills in the street or driveways. A little bit is all it can take to make us very sick or worse! If your people have it in the garage, remind them to be sure to keep it tightly sealed and out of our reach.
We have a few outdoor kitties in our neighborhood, along with squirrels and other animals. Be sure to make some noise on your car hood before starting the engine, just in case somebody snuck in to keep out of the cold.

Hi pals, sorry we've been falling behind in our updates. Mom says life has been a little busy here, but that's no excuse, darn it!

We hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving here in the U.S. (and all over the world too!). I know sometimes I take all that I have fur granted, we're really very fortunate.
We had a wonderful holiday, the best part has been mom filling my kong with bits of turkey and sweet potato, along with my kibble of course!
I love this time of year, not too hot, not too cold. It makes mom sad to see summer go, but it always comes back, so we just need to "go with the flow"!
Because our theme today is "Rootin', Tootin' Tuesday", here's a few pictures of me rootin' (I won't admit to any "tootin'") at one of our favorite dog parks, Rocky Top!

Last Sunday the Church of the Ascension in New York City was holding a Blessing of the Animals. Mom thinks I need all the blessings I can get, so into the city we went!
It was a baroootiful day, nice and warm with lots of sunshine. And once we got to the Church, there were so many animals, patiently waiting to be blessed. Birds, kitties and doggies of course!

My pal Denise works and sings in the choir at this historic church in the West Village. She talks about me all the time to her friends so they were so happy to finally be able to meet me. I felt like a celebrity!

In honor of tomorrow's Walk For A Cure, my pals at the Barker Lounge took pictures of all of us doggies wearing pink shirts. I felt a little silly, but realized that this is very important. It helps to raise awareness and also raises money toward research, so that someday, we'll be cancer free. Mom lost her own mother to breast cancer, so we take this great cause to heart.

Halloween Preparations

As many of you know, I spend a few days a week at the Barker Lounge. I love it there, and they love me back! I get to be a dog, running, playing and getting into trouble sometimes too. All the things a hound's supposed to do!
Every year the Lounge has a Halloween Pawty.... and every year mom thinks its a great idea to dress me up. I put up with it, as there's always a few treats in it fur me, but I don't like to stay "dressed up" too long. The deal is, I'll wear the outfit, peoples can take some pictures, then I'm back to being myself!

Mom has to catch up with reporting on all the fun and great things that she learned while at BarkWorld Expo, but her work keeps getting in the way *kicking work stuff*!

BarkWorld Expo, Day 2

Mom's away at a Social Media Conference this weekend, The BarkWorld Expo. I made her promise to post from the "field", since I'm staying with my crew at the Barker Lounge!
She's having a blast in Atlanta, learning so much plus seeing old friends and meeting so many of our Twitter pals' parents and staff. (Now if she can only figure out how to upload photos from iPad to blog, I'd be a happy hound!)

Puptoberfest!

Saturday we got in the car to go to the 11th Hour Rescue's Puptoberfest! This year it was held at the Craigmeur Recreation Complex in Rockaway, NJ. What a terrific place! We had to drive along windy roads to get there, through hill and dale as mom likes to say. She let me stick my snout out to catch sniffs of all the woods and grasses as we drove on.

Once we got there, I had to sniff and check out everything! There were so many peoples and their doggies there! Lots of food for pups (and people too!) and plenty of things to look at.

There were also lots of dogs there, waiting for their forever homes. The volunteers walked them around to meet and greet all the visitors, showing how well behaved they are. We hope most found a good family to become a part of before the day was over!

Thankful Thursday!

Every now and then I need to stop and think of all that I should be thankful for. There are so many doggies and kitties without a home to shelter them and a family to love them. I am so blessed to have everything that I need and even more! I'm even thankful for our kitty Toby (he's 19 years old & wakes mom up at 4:30 ish every morning. He thinks its time for breakfast!).

I'm thankful that I'm able to spend some time at my doggy daycare. They must be thankful for me 'cause they have my portrait in one of the playrooms!

And I'm thankful to all my Twitter and FaceBook pals! Thanks for being our friends, baroooo!

Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week!

Petfinder.com has designated this week (September 17- 25) as "Adopt-A-Less_Adoptable-Pet" Week. My mom has a soft spot in her heart for Petfinder.com, that's where she found me! My litter mates and I were dumped at a Georgia kill-shelter, all of us suffering from Parvo. Parvo is very expensive to treat, so things didn't look very good for us. Thankfully, 11th Hour Rescue, from Hopatcong, NJ rescued us. They brought us here to New Jersey and had all of us treated and cared for, thanks to their wonderful volunteers and contributers. We now share our home with three senior kitties *whispering, now they're 19 years young!*, all adopted as "mature" adults (9+ years) and with two (mostly black) kittens found on our street during the Christmas holidays. We love them all (just don't tell my doggy pals at the lounge, 'kay?). It breaks our hearts to see so many pets needing to enjoy the comfort and love of their forever families. I'd like to introduce you to a couple of special pets featured at 11th Hour, the first is Mason, a Shepherd/Hound mix. Here is his story:

"My name is Mason. I am a 5-6 month old shepherd\hound\mastiff mix. I will be around 40-45 lbs. when I am full grown. I used to live way down south, but some really nice people brought me all the way to NJ, so I can have a better chance at finding a home. "I am what everyone calls a “special needs” dog. I was born with a non-contagious virus that caused nerve damage to my back legs. So, I am unable to walk. I may be a candidate for wheelchair when I am all grown up, but for now I have to be carried. I really don’t mind that one bit, because I love to be cuddled. I am very sweet and such a happy dog and even though I am different from other dogs I don’t let that bother me. And another wonderful hound, Pacer. He is eleven to twelve years old and has lived in horrible conditions. He's never known the love and kindness of a real home. One of the things that we're very proud of is working as an editor for the Anipal Times! Mom was thrilled to meet @CokietheCat 's human at BlogPaws last week, it was like she's known her fur years! It helped that she had Cokie's doppleganger w/her too!

Sometimes I have to stop and remember that I have so much to be thankful for. I was left in a Georgia shelter with my littermates, all suffering from Parvo. Luckily, 11th Hour Rescue brought us to New Jersey, treated us and found us our forever homes.
Yes, I have a comfy home, lots of noms and plenty of love. For this I am very thankful. I wish all the kitties and doggies everywhere could be as lucky as me.
Mom was away last weekend at something called "BlogPaws". She had a blast, learning so much and meeting up w/ all her Twitter pals too. And they weathered through Hurricane Irene! OMD!
The opening speakers were the fellas from Rescue Ink. Wow! They're a tough crew, but their mission is to rescue animals in danger and to "re-educate" abusers. These guys are terrific! Anytime we have the chance to help donate food to shelter pets who need it most, we're all for it. And once again, here's a way that all bloggers can help too.

Write a Post, Help a Dog 2011

At this year's BlogPaws pet bloggers conference, Pedigree has resurrected an insanely successful "Write a Post, Help a Dog" program. In 2010, 391 bloggers wrote about the program and with each post, Pedigree donated 20 pounds of its Healthy Longevity dog food to shelter animals. In all, 7,820 pounds of food was donated to two shelters renowned for their care of senior dogs: Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco and Castaway Critters in Harrisburg, Pa.

How you can help in 2011

Simply spread the word about Write a Post, Help a Dog 2011 and once again Pedigree will donate 20 pounds of food for each blogger's post. Here's all you need to include in your post:

* The Write a Post, Help a Dog program is aimed at raising awareness and food for the more than four million dogs that wind up in shelters and breed rescues each year.
* For each blog post mentioning the Pedigree Foundation from now until midnight ET on September 3, Pedigree will donate 20 pounds of its new dry Pedigree recipe food for dogs -- its best recipe ever -- to a shelter, because every dog deserves leading nutrition.

Coonhound's Day Out!

Saturday mom took me to L'Oreal's 8th annual "Your Dog Is Worth It Too" Event. The employees volunteer their time and talents to put together a great day for doggies and their people. All the proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
It was very hot, but there were lots of pools and misters. The grounds were slippery because we had torrential rains the day before, but we were very careful. I tried to keep in the shade whenever I could, barooo!
There were lots of vendors and so many rescues represented, including mine! 11th Hour Rescue! I wish mom got a picture when we stopped by for a visit, but we'll be attending their Puptoberfest in a few weeks, so I'll be sure to remind her then.
It was a terrific day, I had a dip in the pool, got lots of treats and pets. People always talk to mom when they see me. I look like a huge beagle, and since treeing walker coonhounds aren't usually seen in these parts, people are a little curious about me.

County Fair in NJ Can Only Mean Trouble!

Yesterday mom went to the Middlesex County Fair. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, silly "no pets allowed" rule, poo to that! So I had to stay home and keep an eye on the kitties, oh well.
A friend of her's had entered a crazy quilt in the Quilt show there, and she won, yay!

Then, she saw the Wolf exhibit, by Howling Woods Farm. They work to rescue domestic bred wolves, wolfdog hybrids and northern breeds. They also educate the public about these beautiful creatures.

She's got a thing about chickens, and keeps talking about keeping a few in MY yard! First she needs to build something called a "coop" and make sure it's secure from any raccoons or even the neighborhood kitties... I'm not in any hurry to share my yard with anyone else. But she keeps looking at chickens, there were so many at the Fair, thanks to the 4-H Club.

Thankfully, she just came home with some handmade soap and doggy treats! So far we're a chicken-free household, but don't know how long that will last!

TGIF, Barooo!

Although my person won't admit it, I'm a very hard working dog. Guarding the house, the yard, my food... you get the idea. I'm surprised I can sleep at night sometimes *shaking head*. So when I play, I play hard too!

It's been so hot here in NJ. To be honest with you, I don't think I would have ever made it in my home state of Georgia! Even with an almost naked belly, it's hard to stay cool! Thank goodness for air conditioning and the lounge. Yes, it was another great day at the lounge. As you can see, I could barely wait to get there!
Mom's getting ready to go away to something called "National History Day", but I don't know why it's called a "day", it's more like 4! She's very excited about her trip, she loves history and to see all the enthusiastic participants really makes her happy. I don't really get it, but if she's happy, I'm happy too!

Broken Kitties?

Had a great day at the lounge, nothing beats running with my pals, swapping stories and playing tricks on the staff. Everyone knows the party doesn't start 'til Prudence gets there! I know, it's not easy being me, but now I'm pooped! I have a reputation for sneaking into the staff room and scarfing down somebody's lunch, so now I have to work on my strategy....

In the meantime, I'd like to ask everyone to please keep my fursibs Wren and Sparrow in your thoughts. Apparently they've been broken and now they're going to get "fixed" tomorrow. Who knew kitties could break? They're so cute, just look at those eyes!

Finally, my first blog post!

I've been after the woman to get my blog started and now finally she's agreed (darn these big paws of mine)! I've got so much to share with anyone who will listen (and now read).
A little bit about my family. I share my home with the peoples and a few kitties (but don't let my buddies at the Lounge know too much about my kitty pals, you know how some dogs can be *shaking head*). Because I'm a big girl, I need to get lots of exercise. Since the peoples have to go to work, I spend a few days a week at a doggie daycare, romping and stomping with my pals. It's like the coolest hang-out!
Dog parks are cool too, and mom takes me to lots to "Doggie" events, she even dressed me up for the Martha Stewart's Doggie Halloween Show last year. She said I was very good, but I thought the entire thing was silly. I nibbled the biscuits from another pup's costume and Marc Morrone, the pet guy, told mom how much he loves hounds! But the car ride into NYC was fun and I got a cool toy for my trouble, baroooo!

One of my favorite things is Twitter. We spend a lot of time tweeting with our anipals, going to pawpawties, dressing up our avi's and just having a blast. I love barktending at the pawties and dropping into #NipClub to unwind. This is another thing I need assistance with (big paws are such a nuisance sometimes), but mom has a lot of fun typing for me.
